A Little on the Personal Side:

·      If you weren’t an author, what would you be? I’ve already had a host of careers and jobs in my life. I am so happy to finally be able to write fiction full-time. I can’t think of a better place to put my head than into my author hat. And I love the opportunity to travel, meet people, and call it all research for my next book!

·      What do you love most about writing? What do you not like? I love getting to know my characters and helping them find the kind of lives I think they deserve. I love the struggle when a character develops his or her own approach to the story and we have to fight over whose approach wins. Usually it’s the character’s! I don’t like it when a character and I simply don’t “click” and I can’t figure out how to bring that character to life. That’s when the delete key is so useful.

·      When you are not writing where can you be found? I can be found somewhere with white sand and salt water. Usually that means one of southeastern North Carolina’s fabulous beaches, or along the banks of the Cape Fear River at low tide. I also love to take road trips: anywhere off the beaten path. I call it research.

A Little on the Professional Side:

·      Of all of the characters you have written, which has been your favorite? Why? Least favorite? Why? Oh, it’s so hard to decide! I love Vince, the protagonist in Moon Beach Magic. He’s gentle, kind, a great cook, and a real hunk. I’d love to meet him in person! Ernestine is a feisty old lady and I’m happy to say I know several strong women of her generation who served as spunky role models.  I’ll talk about my other favorite, Lizzie, in the next question.

I have written a number of not very nice characters, but most of them have either a glimmer of humanity or I’ve provided a clue why they’re so nasty. My least favorite character has probably been the Cake Lady. You’ll have to read Moon Beach Magic to see if you agree.

·      Has there been a character that has “written itself”? Who? Absolutely. Lizzie started out as a minor character. Before long, she was sassing her way across the pages and taking Moon Beach, and me, by storm.

·      How do you connect with your readers? (book clubs, online chats, etc.) I think the personal touch is important, especially when SO many books are available for readers to choose from and I’d like them to pick mine. I love doing book clubs. It’s satisfying to connect directly with readers and find out what they like and don’t like about my work. I’m available and set up for Skype so distance isn’t much of a problem. I like blog tours. I ESPECIALLY like opportunities like this, where I can answer questions and share them with other readers. I also enjoy visiting other authors’ blogs and chatting.

A Little on the Personal Side:

  • What types of books do you read? To me books are the essence of life. Limiting myself to reading any type, or to a specific genre is a disservice, in my opinion, but for the sake of the question I will say I tend to read a lot of paranormal, or supernatural romances.
  • Do you have a favorite place to write? Not really because I write when inspiration, or an idea strikes me. I keep notebooks on hand, and have even been known to pen a poem on a napkin at times. I write wherever, whenever, and however possible.
  • If you weren’t an author what would you be? I would probably be a Spanish translator, or an elementary school teacher because I have worked as a translator in the past. I have ten years experience, and am very fluent with the language. As for teaching I have a love of helping others, and especially children with disabilities.
